R.Atherton and S.Hill first in DH final in Maribor

Maribor, September 16 - Today the 2007 Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Finals in Slovenia ended with the downhill race on the 2.8 km, 450 m elevation drop track. Rachel Atherton (GBr, Animal Commencal) and Sam Hill (Aus, Iron Horse/Monster Energy) won the last race of the season. Atherton successfully returned to racing with a silver from the World Championships in Scotland last week after an injury in early season. This time she was 8.63 faster than second placed co-national Tracy Moseley (Kona Les Gets) and 9.33 ahead of Tracey Hannah (Aus) in third.
World Champion Sabrina Jonnier (Fra, Iron Horse/Monster Energy) who finished in 6th is the overall World Cup winner, her team also won the UCI Trade Team standings while the Junior World Champion Floriane Pugin is the highest ranked junior.
In men's race Sam Hill won his third consecutive World Cup race and confirmed his overall title. Today Gee Atherton (GBr, Animal Commencal) finished second 1.33 behind and Julien Camellini (Fra) was third 2.56 behind the winner. Fourth placed Fabien Pedemanaud (Fra) and fifth placed Marc Beaumont (GBr, MBUK Santa Cruz) were decided by a difference no larger than a 1/1000 of a second. Maribor race was very unlucky for 2007 vice-Champion from Fort William - Fabien Barel, with starting number '13'. The Frenchmen has been taken by ambulance on sunday morning during training race.
In the overall standings Matti Lehikoinen (Fin, G-Cross Honda) placed second behind Hill, Steve Peat (GBr, Santa Cruz Syndicate) took third after finishing 78th today with a flat tire. Team G-Cross Honda is the number one men's DH team of the season while Josh Bryceland (GBr) is the highest ranked junior rider.
Some 10.000 spectators showed up to see Saturday's cross-country and 4-cross, followed by a concert by ska-punk band Elvis Jackson. Some 13.000 came to see today's downhill race, supplying a noisy background for the world's fastest riders from top to bottom.
The World Cup will be back to Maribor on May 10 and 11 next year with the first DH and 4X races of the season.
