4X Maribor 2007 World Cup - Beerten and Saladini on the top September 18,2007
Maribor, September 15 - At the 2007 Nissan UCI Mountain Bike World Cup Finals in Slovenia Saturday brought last races of the season in cross-country and 4-cross. Winners at Maribor Pohorje are Ying Liu (Chn), Fredrik Kessiakoff (Swe) in cross-country and Anneke Beerten (Ned), Romain Saladini (Fra) in 4-cross. Upset in overall women's 4X in Beerten's favor.
In women's XCO the 22 year old Chinese Jing Liu was the first of the day to score her first World Cup victory. After 26.2 km she crossed the finish line 43 seconds in front of Canadian Marie-Helene Premont (Rocky Mountain Haywood) in second and 52 seconds in front of new World Champion and World Cup Champion Irina Kalentieva of Russia. In overall final ranking Kalentieva is followed by Premont and another Chinese National Team rider Ren Chengyuan who is at the same time the winner of Under 23 title. Ghost International Racing Team from Germany is the winner of team standings.
In men's race the one to remember Slovenia after his first World Cup victory is the 27 year old Swedish Champion Fredrik Kessiakoff (Cannondale Vredestein). He took the lead soon into the 36.6 km race from German Manuel Fumic (Fumic Brothers International). "Fredi" finally finished a minute 25 in front of second placed Swiss Christoph Sauser and 1.41 in front of third placed Fumic. Spanish Champion Jose Antonio Hermida (Multivan Merida Biking Team) had to settle for fourth after riding in second for most of the race but finally giving it up, suffering from a cold.
The World Champion Julien Absalon (Orbea) secured his overall title before the final. Today he only placed 18th, not motivated and also helping out his teammate Inaki Lejaretta in his hunt for an Olympic startplace. In final standing he is followed by Hermida and Sauser while Swiss Nino Schurter Swisspower MTB Team) wins the U23 title and Cannondale Vredestein the team title.
The evening 4-cross final provided a dramatic duel for the overall women's title. After four events the World Champion Jill Kintner (USA) only had a 40 point lead from Anneke Beerten (Ned, Bikepark.ch TUI). Kintner's lead vanished when she was eliminated in the semi-final. Winning the small final didn't bring her enough points to stay in the lead after Anneke Beerten, also the fastest in qualification, won the big final in front of Mio Suemasa (Jpn) and Melissa Buhl (USA). So Beerten became the World Cup 4X Champion in front of Kintner and Suemasa. Swiss Bikepark.ch TUI is the best women's team in the discipline.
Another World Champion from USA Brian Lopes didn't need to worry about his overall title after winning three out of four previous events and finishing second in fourth. He could afford being eliminated in the semi-final. 20 year old French rider Romain Saladini became the third name today to be added to the list of winners of a World Cup round. Like a week ago at the World Championships in Scotland he was the fastest in qualification. Only this time he didn't settle for second in the final. In the last race of the night he defeated Czech Michal Prokop, Dan Atherton of Great Britain (Animal Commencal) and co-national Karim Amour (a winner in dual here in 1999).
Prokop and Australian Jared Graves stepped by Lopes on the overall podium while Austrian based Gravity Group won the team title.
